The next 10 years are dominated by the formation of a fundamentally different society. Advances in technologies such as: robotization, artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, 3D/4D printing, solar energy, nanotechnology, etc. are collectively causing the 4th industrial revolution. At a rapid pace, more and more work is being automated. This transformation is inevitable and irreversible. It is changing the way we live and work.
The impact of automation is becoming more and more apparent, and currently, even positions in certain industries are rapidly disappearing. Employees must not only be competent for their current tasks and function, but also look beyond that. They must be competent today to perform functions and roles of the future. But how do you stay future-proof in the job market?
We are getting older and have to work longer, technological developments follow each other in rapid succession. In addition, the labor market is becoming increasingly flexible. Technological changes are really not only for low-skilled work, as I often hear. It is about routine work, where information has to be processed and evaluated. This work can be technologized. Computers and artificial intelligence can do it faster, better and cheaper than humans. This is sometimes seen as a threat, but I would like to see it mostly as an opportunity. However, make sure you are prepared for it and embrace digital developments.
Automation and robotization are creating a gap between the people trained now and the people in demand in the future. That is why it is enormously important to invest in sustainable employability now. That means your employer needs to continuously invest in your education, development, commitment and job satisfaction.
But as an employee, you must also invest in your own development. Make sure you can and want to adapt to new situations. Demonstrate that you can learn new behavior quickly and always look at a situation from multiple perspectives so that you can always arrive at the best solution. In other words, ensure a high degree of "learning agility," because that's what they call it when someone has the potential to learn new things quickly in general.
My advice: Get with the times, learn about the digital revolution and what impact it will have on your job. Make sure the organizational goals and expectations about your individual performance are clear to you. Start from your own strengths and your potential. Ask your manager as well as your colleagues for 360 feedback. Also invest time in giving feedback. Treams' feedback module , for example, lends itself perfectly to this purpose and provides you with valuable insights. Make the most of that and strengthen your own success!
In the future, work will be organized in increasingly flatter organizational structures. Multidisciplinary teams will increasingly work together on a particular job and then split up again.
Work together with your manager to shape the new future and work with these tips on your own added value, your success and your job happiness !
