What is a 1-on-1 call and why do you conduct 1-on-1 calls?

A one-on-one interview is a time for an open conversation between manager and employee. This conversation is not about numbers and efforts. It is a time for coaching, mentoring and good conversation. The goal: to help employees do their jobs to the best of their ability.

In 3 steps to a good conversation

1. Prepare the interview

A one-on-one interview is a time for an open conversation between manager and employee. This conversation is not about numbers and efforts. The one-on-one interview is a good time for coaching and mentoring. The goal: to help employees do their jobs to the best of their ability.

2. The conversation

Be honest and clear. Ask as many open-ended questions as possible. That way you don't put answers in your mouth and you get more response. Pay attention to the tone in which you speak. Imagine how the other person feels about a particular topic. Try to understand the other person. You do this by actively listening. Link personal ambitions and achievements to the growth and goals of the organization. Also actively ask the other person for feedback. Help each other grow.

3. Next steps

What do you agree on? What can the other person improve and how will you measure this? Make an action list and record this so you can evaluate it the next time. You can do this for example in our new notes feature. Don't have fixed dates for your 1-on-1's? Then schedule a new one right at the end of the appointment. Also ask for feedback and input from colleagues, this can definitely help you in your growth and development.
