What is it?
In many cases, it is a synonym for "intelligence," being smart or good at something. In other cases, it is used as another word for "athletic," such as in the sports world. Often people can easily get away without knowing the exact definition; we often understand what is meant anyway. But what really is the meaning? Many people don't know. Because what exactly made that one person one of the world's top soccer players? And what makes that one employee so distinctive in his/her field? The word talent has become increasingly popular in the workplace in recent years, especially in HR departments. Job titles such as "chief talent officer" and "talent acquisition" shot up like mushrooms. In the workplace, it can describe innate or managed skills, but it is also used to describe high-performing employees. So the exact meaning depends on the context and reference point.
How do you like it?
In the rapidly changing world, companies want to win the "war for talent. However, many organizations struggle to attract top talent. The goal is to find high-potential employees who will contribute to achieving company goals. In this "war for talent," it is important to first know what you are looking for. Make a list of characteristics that this (new) employee should have. Make sure these requirements are realistic and distinguish between must-haves and nice-to-haves. Second, it is good to look beyond education and work experience. The fit with culture is much more important. Look at hobbies and personal attributes as well. Third, it is crucial to ask the right questions during the interview process. That includes questions that are about skills. Finally, it is important to focus on candidates' mental strengths. Such as the will to grow, resilience and mindset. After all, these are important components of talent development.
What is talent management?
Talent Management is about how, as an organization, you deal with the talent present and give the opportunity to develop talent. This is not just for a select group of high potentials. It is in fact about how you can further develop the talent present. It is up to the organization to facilitate this and create the right circumstances in which the talent of each employee can be discovered and further developed.
